Words are powerful.
A DM and players together use words to create a world that they experience together. As a DM, with a simple phrase, I can either lift the spirits of my players or bring them down to their knees. That is why I make it a point to always speak hope, love, and value into their lives. I hope these weekly messages give you some bardic inspiration, too.
But like Bardic Inspiration, while it benefits others, I often fail to hear it myself. My internal voice often sounds more like Vicious Mockery.
But when that happens, I’ve learned to stop and ask myself, “If someone I cared about were feeling like I am now, putting themselves down, what would I tell them? How would I speak the truth of their value to them?”
It can be easy to forget what we know to be true. When negative thoughts about yourself arise, check for traps, because your brain can both set them and disarm them.
When we recognize the truth that we are lovable, capable, and worthwhile, that assurance makes us more capable, as confidence encourages innovation and initiative. If we think, “I’m no good,” that stops us from sharing our ideas and skills, stifling our contribution to the world, and the world is poorer because we believed the lies.
We need to be reminded of what we know to be true. If you don’t know it already, know it now. You are loved and valued. You have a future. Even if the present or past makes life challenging, it's still true. And I don’t know about you, but I need to be reminded of that. Every. Single. Day. I don’t know why, but I do. Thankfully, my family does that. My friends do that. My faith does that. I hope you have voices reminding you of that truth, too.
Thanks for joining us as we build this world as a more welcoming and inclusive environment. Your presence in this universe makes it better. Thanks for being in it. |
