Ages ago (last Friday), two intrepid adventurers, Dale and Teresa, embarked on an epic quest to discover the legendary treasures within the lost (widely advertised) city (convention center) of Gamehole Con.
Our heroes had heard many legends (podcasts & conversations) about the Con, but given the 35 years since either of them had pursued a similar adventure, they went in woefully unprepared. They hoped to encounter known allies, but without prior arrangements, they instead encountered the greatest possible threat — Schedule Differences (Gargantuan Aberration, CR 30)! (We should’ve checked to see when and where our friends would be instead of just expecting to run into them.) Misinterpreting clues led to dead ends when seeking out merchants who didn’t have carts in the town square. (I saw posts from people who planned to attend and wrongly assumed they’d have a vendor booth to make them easy to find.)
Even so, the environment was warm and inviting, filled with the bustle of fellow gamers, and even that noise brought secrets to light. (I was glad I hadn’t signed up for a game. I wouldn’t be able to filter the background noise well enough to hear across the table.) They acquired treasures to bring home (Our kids requested photos of cosplayers, who were happy to help.). And they did succeed in a few encounters with other attendees that will bring benefits, some presently, and some in the future.
Yet despite disappointments and missed opportunities, they accomplished their goal! After all, this was primarily a scouting mission to prepare for future adventures, and they acquired invaluable information about the environment and how to navigate it.
As they rode home into the sunset (in their minivan), pondering their adventure, Teresa turned to Dale and said, “My happy place is anywhere alone with you.” The weekend would bring the opportunity for a long rest.
So they arrived home stronger, eager to use their acquired secrets for arcane plans.
It’s easy to consider any adventure a failure when it doesn’t meet (sometimes unrealistic) expectations, but if it better prepares us for many future adventures, then the effort is a success.
And despite not meeting any of you there, the fact that you're reading this right now makes me happy. |
