I hope everyone who celebrates Thanksgiving had an enjoyable holiday. We had most of our family at our house, which meant a lot of preparation throughout the week. And then Thursday afternoon, my head felt like a storm cloud developed as my depression hit me the hardest it has since I started therapy. By the time we sat down to eat that evening, it had mostly subsided, but just when I thought I could stop therapy, that sudden resurgence caught me by surprise.
As I reflected on it, I came to the realization that “better” isn’t “always better.” Stress like holidays and any number of other factors can trigger all kinds of responses in our bodies, including our brains. At any given point in time, our bodies may choose to roll on their own Wild Magic Surge table, producing unpredictable results.
At the same time, “worse” isn’t “always worse.” When everything feels hopeless, you can be sure that it won’t always be that way. Trauma or grief can often leave you feeling like “worse” is your new destiny, but if you’re feeling that way or begin to feel that way in the future, that dungeon has an exit, and you’ll find it if you learn to navigate the dungeon. And no matter what, my day is better today because you’re in it. And when you hit a worse day, you’re not delving through that dungeon alone. We’re in this together, and we’ll get through it together. |
