Some spells are always useful, the go-to kinds of spells that you prepare and use nearly every session. Fireball. Thunderwave. Cure Wounds. And then you find spells that you wonder whether they’re worth the pages in your spell book. Nystul’s Magic Aura. Protection from Poison. See Invisible. Yes, they’re useful, but only in specific situations. Unless you’re going into the swamp or a Lolth cult, you probably won’t prepare Freedom of Movement.
Do you ever reflect on the past day, the past year, or your life and wonder, “Am I one of those spells? In the impact I make, should I strive for an area of effect or a single target? Am I the Longstrider of humanity?” I often struggle with how to best use my resources, how to be most effective. Instead of connecting with many people in my local community, my family gets most of my time, because sometimes, Heal is more important than Mass Cure Wounds. My career focuses on raising awareness of the marginalized, and together, you, our team, and I have connected with tens of thousands of people to varying degrees, but the TTRPG space, while larger than ever, is still a single goblin in a global horde.
But are those spells useless? Not if that’s what you need. Not if that’s the only spell that will enable you to rescue the unicorn. For that one person in your life (or even your future life), you may be the only one who precisely meets that need.
I for one am glad to have you in my spellbook. |
