Last night, our D&D party was hired to stop an evil scarecrow from terrorizing a farm. This seemed like an easy task. Much of Wyrmworks Publishing’s work involves knocking down straw men! So we devised a trap by soaking a patch of grass in lantern oil and igniting it after luring the scarecrow in. We felt proud of our success until another scarecrow attacked the farm the next night!
Although our ranger’s player couldn’t make it (failed save against her schedule), we managed to trace the scarecrow’s path back to two more of them. I failed my save against a paralyzing gaze, but we avoided a TPK when the fighter rolled two natural 20s in a row.
It’s a common movie trope and a fun adventure twist — the victory celebration gets interrupted by a frantic knock on the door. The villain is back and stronger than ever!
In real life, that’s not so fun. The disease relapses. Past trauma gets triggered. The relationship that was finally peaceful gets disrupted. And you don’t have any oil this time to fight those scarecrows. I know what that’s like. Wyrmworks Publishing was born out of a situation like that.
But even when the situation looks hopeless, you never know when a “fighter rolls 2 crits” solution will come. I’ve learned repeatedly that the past and present do not control the future. Most of my life is a story of insurmountable challenges and miraculous unexpected rescues. And yeah, we still have conflicts that aren’t resolved. I’m sure you do, too. But we choose to hope and pray for solutions and live in expectation of resolution. It makes the present easier until we get to that future.
You’re not alone. You have a future. We’ve got this. |
