Haste

3rd-level transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action

Components: VSM a shaving of licorice root

Range: 30 feet

Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

Choose a willing creature that you can see within range. Until the spell ends, the target’s speed is doubled, it gains a +2 bonus to AC, it has advantage on Dexterity saving throws, and it gains an additional action on each of its turns. That action can be used only to take the Attack (one weapon attack only), Dash, Disengage, Hide, or Use an Object action.
When the spell ends, the target can’t move or take actions until after its next turn, as a wave of lethargy sweeps over it.

This classic spell goes all the way back to the beginning of D&D, and each time, it has a side effect.

Now imagine having this spell affecting you for an entire day. You run around, get lots of work done, dodging problems and resolving them quickly for 16 hours. The spell ends, and you can’t move for 96 minutes.

While you may not be sprinting the whole time, if you’re anything like me, you find yourself pushing to get more done than is healthy for you — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. It’s exhausting.

It’s easier to say, “I can’t buy that. I can’t afford it. I don’t have the money.” But while my ADHD exacerbates this by flooding my mind with new ideas and making it difficult to estimate time commitments and making it difficult to say, “No,” to new opportunities, you don’t have to be neurospicy to experience pressure to keep filling your calendar and To Do list with more than it can hold.

You can’t put a Bag of Holding into another Bag of Holding. and you can’t put a calendar into another calendar, nor can you multiply energy safely.

Recognize that your time and energy are real and tangible resources, just like money. Invest them in such a way that you will have them when you need them. Don’t burn up all your spell slots before you get to the BBEG!

New this week

We have some great news coming from Wizards of the Coast, and I had a fantastic conversation about racial representation in TTRPGs, and it's all on this month's episode of Gaining Advantage.

Projects We Love
Spooky book against gray rural map; The Folk From Harrowthorpe; A Tier 1 5th Edition Adventure by JVC Parry

Just in time for Halloween, acclaimed writer JVC Parry is Kickstarting The Folk from Harrowthorpe, a pulp horror adventure. In Harrowthorpe, the ordinary turns nightmarish. This Halloween-ready one-shot takes your characters on a gripping journey. Uncover a malicious plot involving animated mannequins and a sinister puppeteer seeking control. I'm getting creeped out just writing about it.

Check out the free preview, and give your D&D party a treat!
