Helping you make lives better through Tabletop Roleplaying Games

Hi {name}!

In this update:

  • When you feel alone…
  • TTRPG Accessibility Improvements!
  • Diversity in Board Games
  • Weird & Creepy solo gamebooks and Frankenstein's Teddy Bear!

Battles are better fought with allies.

Last night, we rewatched Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief since my daughter just finished the book. When they got to Aunty Em’s Gnome Emporium and split up, I said, “Don’t split the party!” We’re stronger together.

As an introvert, I enjoy spending time by myself. At the same time, I don’t like isolation. Studies on solitary confinement have demonstrated that complete isolation is a form of torture. When I’m taking time to myself, that time has the context of friends and family who are nearly always within reach, that I can depend on, and who depend just as much on me.

Sometimes, especially when I’m trying to push the TTRPG culture another step toward broader accessibility, it’s easy to feel alone, like the “A Paladin in Hell” art from the 1e PHB. “How is it 2024, and every new initiative we make is the first time anyone on earth has done this? Am I exaggerating the importance of all of this?”

But I’m not alone. We have a fantastic team ready to lend their talents to the cause. We have loyal patrons who give of themselves every month to support our work. We have you, who support us however you can, whether financially, socially, or by showing your interest through reading these messages.

We have many battles to fight, but we’re gaining ground, and our cause is just. So whether it’s your sword, your spell, or your song, thanks for storming the castle with us!

Progress in TTRPG Accessibility

Speaking of pushing for broader accessibility, DriveThruRPG has accepted my request and now added the following note to their publication interface for watermarking PDFs:

WARNING: This is now unchecked by default.

Select this option if your product file is in PDF format, and you wish for this product to be watermarked. Click here to learn more about watermarking your files.

Note: Adding watermarking to your files runs the risk of stripping interactive elements and accessibility features.

It's not as detailed as I would've liked, but it's a start. I've also asked them to update their help documentation to explain that watermarking keeps screen readers from reading the PDF, and they've acknowledged the importance.

And on a related note, I just found out Affinity Publisher recently (in November) added Alt Text and tagging!!! Since it's the affordable layout program that a lot of small TTRPG publishers use, this makes it feasible to (and frankly, eliminates any excuse not to) add these accessibility features to PDFs & ePubs.

I also sent a request to DriveThruRPG to update their help documentation to include the importance of and instructions for including alt text and tagging in publications.

Watch for a full article in the future once they finish these revisions.

Projects We Love
Gloom: Unhappy Birthday at Castle Slogar (Frankenstein-like tween girl with brain surgery teddy bear), Cryptid Hunt (Brown parchment with line-drawn monsters), A Guide to Dream Travel (gray machinery against teal background)

Speaking of getting a little alone time, when you want an interactive story but either can't get together with friends or need some time to yourself, these puzzle gamebooks from our friends at Atlas Games, on Kickstarter until this Thursday, will satisfy your creativity while offering varying degrees of challenge for your problem-solving skills!

For readers of all ages and abilities, each book is challenging enough to be satisfying to solve, but not so difficult it’s just frustrating. Unhappy Birthday and Cryptid Hunt also have their own custom websites, which provide hints and solutions so you never get stuck.

Plus, check out the plush Frankenstein's Teddy Bear!!! 🧸🧠😍

Only 2 Days Left to Back the Kickstarter!

Thanks for your support!
